Do It Yourself by Author Shelley Moore Thomas

Please help us welcome, Shelley “The Story Queen” Moore Thomas to the Con!

Shelley Moore Thomas is the author of ten books for children, including the much heralded GOOD KNIGHT series (Penguin) and the forthcoming fantasy middle-grade novel, THE SEVEN TALES OF TRINKET (FSG Macmillan).  In addition, she is an elementary school teacher and a storyteller known as the Story Queen.  With a collection of rather rambunctious puppets, she performs at libraries, book fairs, and other special events. She also runs writing workshops for children when she can. Currently, she is working on a new picture book, and a new novel as well. Shelley is married and has three daughters, two dogs and one cat.  She lives in Oceanside, California, but don’t let the name fool you. She is not that close to the ocean, really.

You can visit her at www.storyqueenscastle.blogspot.com.

Guided by a tattered map, accompanied by Thomas the Pig Boy, and inspired by the storyteller’s blood that thrums through her veins, eleven-year-old Trinket searches for the seven stories she needs to become a bard like her father, who disappeared years before. She befriends a fortune-telling gypsy girl; returns a child stolen by the selkies to his true mother; confronts a banshee and receives a message from a ghost; helps a village girl outwit—and out-dance—the Faerie Queen; travels beyond the grave to battle a dastardly undead Highwayman; and meets a hound so loyal he fights a wolf to the death to protect the baby prince left in his charge. All fine material for six tales, but it is the seventh tale, in which Trinket learns her father’s true fate, that changes her life forever.

Just wondering if I missed the “Middle Grade Rules” session at 12:30pm today. I am new to all of this but I am going by the schedule and I don’t see that anywhere. I did watch this video though. :)

  2. Lucky potatoes for all!! And for one of you, a book….and some swag!! It’s just a wonderful day, no?

But really, the best thing about today is Write On Con. I am learning so much! Loved the meter maids and Agent Peter showing what works in a query in the forums.

And really, the power of the first line with Lissa. Wow. Bring on the rest of Write-on Con!!

  3. Hi Felicia,

There was just a little mix-up about the title of the session. It was DIY, not Middle Grade Rules…because I’m not smart enough to know all of the rules for middle grade!! I just try and tell a story in the best way that I can. However, I, too, would love to go to a session on rules for mg….anyone want to give it a go?

I think the most important rule when writing for kids is DON’T BE BORING:)

    xo-

    Shelley

  4. Or….maybe it’s just that MIDDLE GRADE RULES!!!

    hehehehe

    Because it does, you know.

Totally enjoyed the presentation. Your creativity made a mistake into a promo. I’m a firm believer that dogs help the process. Thanks, Shelley!

  6. Can’t wait to read your book!

  7. Shelley, I just love you. LOVED the trinket boxes. :)

  8. Shelley! You’re the best.

  9. thanks. lol it’s ok about the mix-up. I just have been following my schedule and there were some things that I couldn’t find. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t me. lol I highlighted things that I wanted to “attend”. AND during the very little downtime, I have been cleaning house. lol I am not a writer, but an illustrator

  10. Oh No! Mr Bill!! :o
Shelley that trailer is awesome and I will be buying this book! Selkies, banshees and faeries! These are few of my favorite things…
Really like the idea of DIY swag. I like collecting ephemera like that, particularly for books, and anything handmade is all the more special. When you are rich and famous, those will be sought after on ebay and someday, who knows, even Antiques Roadshow! I wish we could buy one of those boxes on etsy. They really are lovely. (And I am so glad you recycled!) Thanks for being at WriteOnCon :)

  11. I love your book trailer! I can’t wait to read these books. Your ideas for repurposing are fab, and you’ve got me thinking about lots of potential uses for some of my screw-ups. :-) Thank you!

  12. DIY that’s so easy I can probably DO! Thanks!

  13. Loved your presentation!
The books trailer was so to the point and intriguing, with great music! Nice job!

  14. Shelley,
This was SO fun to watch. I know I’d want a trinket box and I’m impressed that you made them (lemonade out of lemons, right?) And the trailer-it got me interested in Trinket, so it’s doing what it should.

Thank you for being a part of WriteOnCon!

  15. Trinket sounds SO good! Thanks so much for participating again in WOC!

  16. So fun! So very fun! I especially love the business card bookmarks and composition books! I tend to like to write stories around art, so I could do something similar with a sketch book (if I’m ever published :) Thanks for this fun vlog!

  17. These are great tips, Shelley! The trinket box and book marks are such fun ideas – perfect for making young readers happy. (Although I’m trying to figure out how you actually made the trinket box! Impressive!) Thank you for sharing!

  18. Shelley, your dog is so cute! Thanks for the ideas about do-it-yourself swag. I’m not at the point of needing it yet, but it’s great to have ideas in the idea bank.

  19. Love the book trailer! Can’t wait to the book to publish so I can read it!

  20. Trinket boxes! Magic potatoes! You have the best swag, not to mention a book for all ages. 2102, wow, that’s shelflife. :D Shelley, you really do make the best vlogs. I’m all smiles and antsy to read
    tThe Seven Tales of Trinket.

  21. Shelley is so amazing. Love the idea with the postcards and how to repurpose them. You rock, Shelley! Thank you! I can’t wait until your book is here to read with my daughter. {hugs}

  22. Loved your presentation. Great ideas of things to create for a middle grade launch. And I loved your trailer. Can’t wait to read your book.

  23. Awesome video! I am envious of your crafty nature, as I have no visual arts skills, but I will take your ideas and put them to use with the swag I have left over from my first e-book launch!

  24. Hey this is a good looking site, is wordpress? Forgive me for the foolish question but if so, what theme is? Thanks!

  25. Sometimes I contemplate if folks truly take time to write something original, or are they only just dishing out words to fill a site. This certainly doesn’t fit that mold. Thank you for taking the time to write with awareness. At times I look at a page and question whether they even proofread it.Fantastic work with this article.

  26. Julie Grasso says:

That was the most adorable presentation. I want you to visit Australia with Trinket. Best of luck. Cheers Julie

  27. This was so much fun to watch. I love the DIY ideas. Tucking those away for when I have a book to launch. :)

  28. Shelley, you’ve been one of my favorite bloggers and authors ever since I started my blog. You’re always so positive and encouraging, and a writer I truly look up to. I can’t wait to read Trinket because it sounds FABULOUS.

  29. What great, creative ideas! I can’t wait to put them to use. And TRINKET sounds like a marvelous book.

  30. I’m commenting here to enter the giveaway – but the book is already in my amazon wishlist, just in case ;) Sounds lovely! Thanks for the DIY tips!

  31. You know, I’m going to be pretty ticked if Vacuum Cleaner Repairs or Best Extended Warranty Reviews wins the copy of my book, just sayin’.

I mean, what if they just let the vacuum suck it up? Then NO ONE gets to read it.

    Defeats the purpose, I think:)

    xoxo-

    Shelley

  32. Great ideas Shelley! I love your goofy manner and will be reading your book asap.
