GO HERE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FORUM EVENT ON BUILDING BETTER SENTENCES.
Gennifer Albin is a recovering academic who realized she could write books of her own and discovered, delightfully, that people would read them. She lives in Kansas with her family and writes full-time. Her debut novel, Crewel, the first in a trilogy, will be published in October 2012 by FSG/Macmillan. it began life as a NaNoWriMo novel in 2010 and attracted multiple agents after a WriteOnCon live event in April 2011.
You can follow her on Twitter and Facebook. She also blogs infrequently at genniferalbin.com and weekly at The League of Extraordinary Writers.

CREWEL by Gennifer Albin: For generations, Spinsters have been called by Arras’s Manipulation Services to work the looms and determine what people eat, where they live, how many children they have, and even when they die. Gifted with the rare ability to weave time with matter, Adelice is exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But once you become a Spinster, there is no turning back. Now caught in a web of lies and intrigue, Adelice must decide who to trust: her kind mentor, Enora; the handsome and mysterious valet Jost; or the charismatic Guild ambassador Cormac Patton. They each have secrets, but Adelice is about to unravel the deadliest one of all, a sinister truth that could destroy reality as she knows it.
Coming October 16, 2012.

Again, I must say the live event was illuminating. I love the skill with which you pare down sentences to their most important elements. Can’t wait to read Crewel!
Wish I could have been in there live, but I just finished reading it. Amazing how much I learned from your editing. Thank you for doing this!
Gennifer,
CREWEL sounds so cewel (sorry that was terrible!). Please don’t hold that one against me
I appreacite your advice and editorial knowledge. I work every day to hone the skill known as “make each word count”.
To not wasting words (only bad jokes).
Kiera
This was a great forum event~cutting out the excess and getting to the heart of meaning with the best sentences possible.
Thanks!
Wow, now I’m really disappointed that I missed the live version of this event. Genn’s suggestions are SPOT-ON, and definitely needed at a point when I’m taking on my “baby”‘s revision for the first time! Awesome stuff.
Bummed I missed the live event, but wow…great content! Thanks so much Gennifer!
Thanks for all the sentence structure help! It’s making me realize I still have a lot to do for both my query and MS, but I am looking forward to it!

Really amazing stuff in the forum! It was great to see your process as you tightened up the wording to make the meaning shine through. THANKS.
Your edits were great, wish I would have made it here in time to have you look at mine!
I wish I would have been one of the first 100, but the advice is excellent none-the-less!
Fabulous post! Can’t wait to go back in later and check out the forum event. Thank you so much for taking the time to help so many writers. I’m dying to get my hands on Crewel!
For me, this event was the highlight of the conference. I will be referring to it for many, many months to come. Thanks to Gennifer. I can’t wait to read Crewel.
I still have a lot of work to do on my picture book, so this will help a lot. Thank you!

Hi Genn, fellow Pitchapalooza winner!
I couldn’t make it to the live event, but I just read through the entire thread. Wow! I love seeing that kind of editing craft at work. Thank you for all the insight on great openings. Would you believe, even with a Pitchapalooza-winning pitch, I’m still working out the right one…?
Thanks again, Genn.
Fantastic information! I love WriteOnCon. Thank you Gennifer for participating.
Wow, CREWEL sounds interesting… it definitely puts a new take on the word “Spinster.” Thanks for the time you’ve dedicated to WriteOnCon!
Great work on the sentences submitted. It’s hard to be exacting sometimes, but it makes the work so much stronger. Loved it!
Congrats on your forthcoming novel, Gennifer!
You are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
I missed the live event, but it was still incredible reading over all of Gennifer’s changes. I definitely feel the need to take another look at my opening now.

Thanks Gennifer, I intend to read over the entire transcript-wish I could have attended live.
Wish I could have been there live, but reading through it now is amazing!
Line-editing is probably my biggest weakness revision wise, so that was awesome. Thanks for taking the time!
Oh my goodness, that was amazing! Wish I had a McGonagall like you for my manuscript.
I’m heading over to the forum to check this out because this is something I have been actively working on with my own writing. Thank you for helping me and not even knowing it.
Thanks!
Great cover for your book!
You are the queen of edits. We all want an app or even better you in person. Thanks.
This forum is fantastic. I’m catching up on your critiques a bit late, but there’s a lot of great stuff to chew on. Thanks!
