Thanks so much for these great vlogs. As a picture book author with zero artistic talent, I’m in awe of illustrators and just how much they bring to the story. I love the idea of the picture book baby now having two parents – thanks, Katie, for the image! I promise I’ll cut the apron strings
The group sounds like a great mix of talented people! I wish they would have answered more than one question, however.
“Write safely.” How cute. Thanks for each of your insights. Writing and illustrating is definitely a collaborative effort. Thanks again for answering the question: How do writers sometimes make an illustrator’s job more difficult?
Would love to see more questions answered (and to know what the other questions are).
Nice interviews, though I, too, would have liked more questions answered. However, to the question about how authors can make an illustrator’s job more difficult I would add that sometimes a story does not have enough interesting scenic variety, which can make it harder to illustrate. Hopefully such a story would not make it into publication for a picture book (it might be a better magazine story) but on occasion it does happen and it can be a challenge. So, when you write, try to think like an artist and ask yourself if your story supplies enough visual interest for 32 pages.
It seems the biggest problem is with the author wanting input into the illustrations. Great thing to keep in mind! Thanks all from Studio 5! Best of luck with your show!
Katie McDee’s analogy is perfect and so helpful: ” your precious baby now has two loving parents.”
And she’s right, children love to notice the additional story lines that are often found within the illustrations. Thank you. Great perspective.
Some good tips and insights. Thanks everyone!
